Catching Snow
(Tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
Snow, snow falling down,
Falling all around.
Stick out your tongue
And catch a ton.
Before they touch the ground.
CYNTHIA IN THE SNOW
by
Gwendolyn Brooks
It slushes.
It hushes
The loudness in the road.
It flitter-twitters,
And laughs away from me.
It laughs a lovely whiteness,
And whitely whirs away,
To be
Some otherwhere,
Still white as milk or shirts.
So beautiful it hurts.
Dance Like Snowflakes...
(Frere Jacques)
Dance like snowflakes,
Dance like snowflakes,
In the air.
In the air.
Whirling, twirling snowflakes,
Whirling, twirling snowflakes,
Here and there.
Here and there.
FIRST SNOW
by
Marie Louise Allen
Snow makes whiteness where it falls.
The bushes look like popcorn-balls.
The places where I always play,
Look like somewhere else today.
Five Fat Walruses
Five fat walruses were at the North Pole.
One climbed upon the ice and fell into a hole.
Four fat walruses swam toward the ice.
One bumped an iceberg which wasn't very nice.
Three fat walruses had whiskers on their faces.
One got bored and went to sleep; he didn't like the
places.
Two fat walruses went to look for food.
One swam far, far away; he wasn't in the mood.
One fat walrus was tired of the play.
She flipped good-bye with her tail and then she swam away.
Frost...
The Farmer in the Dell
The frost is on the roof,
(Point hands over head)
The frost is on the ground.
(Point to the floor)
The frost is on the window,
(Make window with your hands)
The frost is all around
Here's a Hill
Here's a hill
All covered with snow.
We'll get ready.
Zoooom!
Down we go!
Holding hands out in the snow
Holding hands out in the snow
Slowly on our way we go
Leaving little paths behind
For the winter owl to find.
I Heard a Bird Sing
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember:
"We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,"
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
Oliver Herford
I Love Snow...
Three Blind Mice
I love snow. I love snow.
Soft, white snow; soft, white snow.
It falls on the ground so soft and white.
Sometime it falls all through the night.
Did you ever see such a beautiful sight
As soft white snow?
ICE
by Dorothy Aldis
When it is the winter time
I run up the street
And I make the ice laugh
With my little feet --
"Crickle, crackle, crickle
Creeet,
Creet,
Creeet."
Icicles
We are little icicles
Melting in the sun.
Can you see our tiny teardrops
Falling one by one?
I'm a Little Snow Pal...
I'm a Little Teapot
I'm a little snow pal running by you,
I'm made of snow, this is true.
But when the children ask me to play
I just cannot sit all day.
It is snowing!
Sing to: Hush Little Baby It is snowing!
It is snowing!
All around,
All around,
Soft and quiet snowflakes,
Soft and quiet snowflakes,
Not a sound,
Not a sound
It's fun to walk in the sparkling snow,
It's fun to walk in the sparkling snow,
And hear my boots go crunch,
I play so hard.
Soon I'm wet and tired
And ready for hot soup with lunch.
JACK FROST
When Jack Frost comes--oh! the fun.
He plays his pranks on everyone.
He'll pinch your nose and bite your toes,
But where he goes--nobody knows.
He paints upon the window-pane,
Tin soldiers, teddy bears and trains,
He nips the leaves from off the trees-
This little man-nobody sees.
Jack Frost
The temperature is freezing!
It's less than thirty-two.
Cause look who's on my window,
It's Jack Frost, that's who!
Jack Frost
In wintertime there lives a sprite
Who makes my windows lacey white.
He paints the grass and flowers, too
And sprinkles them with icy dew.
Dainty cyrstals, frozen flakes
What a pretty sight this makes!
Jack Frost comes when I'm asleep.
Quick! Take a look!
His gift won't keep.
Let's go walking in the snow,
Let's go walking in the snow,
in the snow, in the snow,
Let's go walking in the snow,
In the snow today
(walk)
Let's go walking on tiptoe,
on tiptoe, on tiptoe,
Let's go walking on tiptoe,
On tiptoe today
(tiptoe)
Lift your right foot way up high,
way up high, way up high,
Lift your right foot way up high,
Way up high today
(Hop on left foot )
Lift your left foot way up high,
way up high, way up high,
Lift your left foot way up high,
Way up high today
(Hop on right foot)
All grab hands and circle round,
circle round, circle round
All grab hands and circle round,
as round and round we go
(Hold hands and circle)
Circle fast, now circle slow
Circle fast, now circle slow
Hands in the air and please let go
(Hands up and let go)
Pretend to fall down easy and slow
On your back into the snow
Open your mouth
a smile on your face
Catch a snowflake
How does it taste?
Glide and glide, slide and slide
( slide feet over the floor)
See me ice skate
Glide and glide, slip and slide
Turn round and round
OOPS
See me fall down
(fall to the floor)
Mr. North Wind
The warm south wind is taking a nap.
Zip up your coat and put on your hat.
So Mr. North Wind won't nip at your toes,
Put on warm boots and warm winter clothes.
Put on your gloves to protect your fingers.
Now Mr. North Wind's cold won't linger
Poems with no titles by A. Fisher
1.
It's quick and it's quiet!
It's soft and it's light.
It's free -- you can't buy it.
It just comes in white.
It's twirly, it's whirly.
It makes quite a show.
What is it in winter?
Does anyone know?
2.
Chilly, brilly winter day.
Snowman round and fat.
I wonder if his head is cold
Because he has no hat?
Sledding Song
By Norman C. Schlichter
Sing a song of winter
Of frosty clouds in air
Sing a song of snowflakes
Falling everywhere
Sing a song of winter
Sing a song of sleds
Sing a song of tumbling
Over heels and heads
Up and down the hillside
When the moon is bright
Sledding is a tiptop
Wintertime delight
Snow Falls
Snow falls on my shoulders.
Snow falls on the ground.
Snow falls around me.
Snow makes not a sound.
Snow Play
Put on your heavy coat,
Pull on your boots,
Put on your hat,
and your mittens too.
Open up the door
Here's what we will do.
(Have children pretend to
put on coats, boots, etc.)
Scoop up some snow
(Hands scooping snow)
Pack it in a ball
(Pat hands together)
Roll it around the yard
(Roll ball)
Let's make a snowman tall
(Hands up over heads)
For his nose we will use a carrot
(Point to nose)
Two rocks will be his eyes
(Point to eyes)
Wrap a scarf around his neck
(Hands behind neck, bring to front)
His mouth a wide surprise
(Open mouths in surprise)
You find a hat
and place it on his head
(Place hands on head)
Good Bye Snowman
(Wave goodbye)
We are going to sled
(Sit down with knees bent)
SNOW STARS
by
Regina Sauro
Delicate
And feathery,
Crystal clear
and white,
Six-point stars
Come tumbling,
Softly
In the night.
Snow Towards Evening
Suddenly the sky turned gray,
The day,
Which had been bitter and chill,
Grew soft and still.
Quietly
From some invisible blossoming tree
Millions of petals cool and white
Drifted and blew
Lifted and flew,
Fell with the falling night.
Melville Cane
Snow, Snow Everywhere!
Snow, snow ev'rywhere,
On the ground and in the air,
In the fields and in the lane,
On the roof and windowpane.
Snow, snow, far and near,
I'm sure glad to see it here.
Snowball fights are lots of fun,
Ha! I got you! Now I'll run!
SNOW
by
Karla Kuskin
We'll play in the snow
And stray in the snow
And stay in the snow
In a snow-white park.
We'll clown in the snow
And frown in the snow
Fall down in the snow
Till it's after dark.
We'll cook snow pies
In a big snow pan.
We'll make snow eyes
In a round snow man.
We'll sing snow songs
And chant snow chants
And roll in the snow
In our fat snow pants.
And when it's time
To go home to eat
We'll have snow toes
On our frosted feet.
SNOW
by
Mary Ann Hoberman
Snow
Snow
Lots of Snow
Everywhere we look and
Everywhere we go
Snow in the sandbox
Snow on the slide
Snow on the bicycle
Left outside
Snow on the steps
And snow on my feet
Snow on the sidewalk
Snow on the sidewalk
Snow on the sidewalk
Down the street.
SNOW
by
Alice Wilkins
The snow fell softly all the night.
It made a blanket soft and white.
It covered houses, flowers, and ground,
But did not make a single sound.
Snow
Down, down and down it falls,
The bushes look like popcorn balls.
The places where I usually play
Look like somewhere else today.
Snowball
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as can be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first -- it wet the bed!
SNOWFALL
by
Margaret Hillert
Someone in the sky last night
Had an awful pillow fight,
And when I woke today I found
All the feathers on the ground
SNOWFLAKES
by
Elizabeth L. Cleveland
Snowflakes falling through the air,
Falling, falling everywhere.
Twisting, turning, floating down,
Covering white the noisy town.
Roofs are laden, window edges,
Snow is sticking to the ledges.
All the streets are silent now.
Comes the shirring of the plow.
Clean behind it shines the track,
Cars are coming, click-a-clack.
People shoveling, piling snow,
Making clear the way to go.
Wagons crunch and autos whir,
Wheels that turn and never stir.
Children run and slide and tumble,
Snow all over, not a grumble.
Snowballs flying, dodge and run!
Here's a day of snowy fun!
Snowflakes...
Sailing, Sailing
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Falling to the ground.
Each one rests so gently,
They never make a sound!
Snowflakes, snowflakes,
Are so pure and white,
The special thing about them is-
No two are alike.
Snowflakes
Snowflakes white are dancing down,
Dancing, dancing all around.
Each one so different, it's surely true.
Here's one for me and one for you!
January Thaw by Margaret Hillert
The sun came out,
And the snowman cried.
His tears ran down
Til the spot was cleared.
He cried so hard
he disappeared!
Snowflakes
(to the tune of "twinkle, twinkle little star")
Snowflakes, snowflakes falling down,
On the trees and on the ground.
I will build a man of snow,
Tall black hat and eyes of coal,
If the sun comes out today,
I will watch you melt away!
Snowflakes
Snowflakes are filling,
are filling the air.
Look at the footprints
I see over there.
Was it a rabbit
Or was it a bear?
Come let us follow it
Back to its lair.
Jean Malloch
Snowflakes Falling Down...
(Row, row, row Your Boat)
Snowflakes falling down,
Falling to the ground.
Big, white fluffy flakes
That do not make a sound.
SNOWFLAKES
by
Mary Mapes Dodge
Little white feathers
Filling the air-
Little white feathers!
How came you there?
We came from the cloud-birds,
Flying so high,
Shaking their white wings
Up in the sky.
Little white feathers,
Swiftlly you go!
Little white snowflakes,
I love you so!
We are swift because
We have work to do;
But look up at us,
And we will kiss you!
Snowy Surprise...
Sometimes the snow falls when I'm sleeping,
(Rest cheek on folded hands.)
I'm so surprised when I awake.
(Stretch and yawn.)
I look out at the world around me,
(Look around.)
It looks like a frosted birthday cake!
(Rub tummy and lick lips.)
Some Snowflakes
Some snowflakes drifted softly down
And made their plans to stay;
But Mister Sun peeked round a cloud
And shone them all away,
And shone them all away.
Again they came and bravely tried
To make the world all white;
But North Wind sent his icy blast
And blew them out of sight,
And blew them out of sight.
Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening
By Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep.
And miles to go before I sleep.
Surprise
I opened my eyes and my room was bright.
I wondered what happened outside last night.
I opened the windows and let everyone know
The world was covered with fluffy white snow.
I grabbed my mittens, my scarf, and my suit
And pulled on my brand new winter boots.
I ran outside and I started to play,
And hoped that the snow was here to stay.
The More It Snows by A.A. Milne
The more it snows ~~
tiddely pom,
The more it goes ~~
tiddely pom,
The more it goes ~~
tiddely pom
On snowing ~~
And nobody knows~~
tiddely pom ,
How cold my toes ~~
tiddely pom,
Are growing.
The North Wind Doth Blow
The North wind doth blow
And we shall have snow.
And what will poor robin do then,
poor thing?
He'll sit in the barn
To keep himself warm,
And hide his head
under his wing,
poor thing.
THE SLED RIDE
Hurry with breakfast,
Dress with great care;
Frost came last night,
There's a nip in the air.
A long, slow climb
Up the snow-covered hill;
Then the sled files down
For a zippy zip thrill!
Laughing, happy voices,
Many spills in the snow;
But again to the hilltop
For a "Yipppy, yip! Go!"
Sleds rushing down
The ice packed trail-
Whether heads-up or a spill
There's a long, loud wail.
The snow fell gently all the night
The snow fell gently all the night.
It made a blanket soft and white.
It covered houses, flowers and ground
But did not make a single sound
"The Snowball."
by Shel Silverstein.
I made myself a snowball
as perfect as can be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for it's head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first it wet the bed.
Walking in the Snow...
Let's go waking in the snow,
Walking, walking on tiptoe.
Lift your right foot way up high,
Then your left foot keep it dry!
All around the yard we skip,
Watch your step, or you might slip
Winter Clothes by Karla Kuskin
Under my hood I have a hat
And under that my hair is flat
Under my coat my sweater's blue -
My sweater's red - I'm wearing two!
My scarf's wound up to my chin
And round my neck, and then tucked in
My gloves were knitted by my aunts
I've mittens too - and pants and pants!
And welly boots with socks inside
The boots are rubber, red and wide
And when I walk I must not fall
Because I can't get up at all!
Winter Cold
Hats and mittens keep us warm
We are ready for the storm
Zip your coat up to your chin
Don't let the cold weather in.
Winter is Coming
By Cynthia Cappetta
"Winter is coming," says the little squirrel gray
"I must have nuts for a cold winter day."
"Winter is coming," says the little grog green
"I'll dig under the pond where I won't be seen."
"Winter is coming," say the little fox red
"I'll find a log for my warm winter bed."
"Winter is coming," says the goose brown and black
"I'll fly south for Winter; in Spring I'll be back
Winter is coming; it's that time of year
What so you do when winter is near?
Winter Song by Alfredo Buffano
The snow, the snow,
Tells its song
silent and light.
A snowflake
is my heart!
**** and the same poem in Spanish:
CANCION INVERNAL
La nieve, la nieve.
dice su cancion
silenciosa y leve.
jCopito de nieve
es mi corazon!
Winter
Sing a song of snowflakes,
Flying in the air;
Sing a song of sleighbells,
Jingling everywhere.
Sing of feath'ry snowdrifts,
Earth all dazzling white;
Sing of gleaming ice rinks,
Sparkling in the light.
Sing of rosy cheeks on
Little girls and boys,
Skating, slipping, sliding,
Full of fun and noise.
YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN IT
It snowed and snowed
And covered the streets.
I climbed in my boots
To unfreeze my cold feet.
I made a snow castle
About fifty feet high
With moats and drawbridges,
And towers to the sky.
You should have seen it.
You were too late!
Last night it melted.
It just couldn't wait.
